I have been teaching history for the last year alongside other humanities subjects. My lessons are always designed to be tailored to the student in question. My lessons are not about you mindlessly absorbing information or doing tasks but rather based on you learning and mastering your subject through a variety of techniques. My lessons will follow a similar structure to ensure continuity for students but within this there is a lot of room for variety. Each lesson will have a big question that we will aim to answer by the end of the session. Starter tasks are usually aimed at either gauging your knowledge or in embedding known knowledge through retrieval tasks such as definition matches or questions. Sources and interpretations are a mainstay of my history teaching. Students should be given the opportunity to engage with these and understand how they shape history. Context of the historical period is always given either through audio, visual or written texts, no previous knowledge is expected or required when being taught within my lessons. Once the starter and main task is completed and the student has gained a level of understanding there will be a summative task. This could be a series of targeted questions. A written paragraph focusing on using historical language, grammar and reasoning. Alongside this other creative methods will be used to ensure students are able to answer the question. Once this is completed time will be left at the end of the lesson to discuss with the student any issues they had and anything that they think would benefit them that I could include in the lessons. Your lessons are tailored to you and will have an active opportunity to shape that.
