Advert description
This course develops the language skills of advanced learners (B2+) with the intention of perfecting their written and spoken command of academic English. Students will develop a mastery over lexicon, pronunciation, and listening comprehension, as well as a comfort with modes of self-expression common to the anglophone university.
Bear in mind that this is a course intended for students who are seeking entry, either undergraduate or graduate, into English-medium universities. It will be taught at an accelerated pace and deal with complex topics. Incoming students are expected to be of requisite proficiency to read articles of this level of sophistication with only limited discomfort. Please consult the instructor should you have any further queries.
Along with assorted materials which will be distributed each week by the instructor or easily accessed on the internet, this course will make use of the textbook Linda Grant's Well Said: Advanced English Pronunciation (Fourth Edition) as well as William Strunk's The Elements of Style (Fourth Edition). Both can either be purchased online or accessed for free via an open source website.
The course will consist of three modules — a rigorous syntactical component dictated by our readings in Grant and Strunk, a stylistic component in which our grammatical lessons will be augmented by readings in essays and poetry, and a spoken component in which students will improve their oratorical style. It mimics the structure of an American college course, and will serve as an introduction into how to conduct rigorous scholarship as well as how best to wield academic language. Depending on student aptitude and preference, the syllabus might be subject to minor alterations.
