I know that starting your jurney with new language, can be difficult. Most of the books will focus on basic communication skills but will not help you to understand something as simple as for example british phonics to help you improve on your reading and writting as well as speaking and listening. I would focus on helping people to develop their English to the level they would feel comfortable comminicating with others as well as being able to manage more formal situations and understand the difference in formal and informal English.
