Advert description
I teach by finding out what motivates students by looking at, if possible, their interests for example. This helps me to select the type of activities or topics for them to read, listen or talk about.
Normally each lesson will have a clear structure so that students now what to expect each time. Normally consisting of three clear stages of a lesson - a presentation - practice - produce structure.
Each of my lessons begins with a warmer. This can be a 2-5 minute activity related to an area of English taught in the last lesson or something that introduces or presents a topic or language function for the rest of the lesson.
The presentation stage could involve reading or listening to a piece of text that introduces or contains the target language function or structure. This also involves eliciting what the student (or students) already understand of the target language (vocabulary, function and/or grammar structure).
The practice stage will involve a variety of exercises the style of which will depend on the age and interests of students. Exercises might involve gap fill exercises or multiple choice for example either written or spoken responses.
Production stage normally requires students to produce something. This could be a role play or a piece of writing allowing the students an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learnt and for me (the teacher) to see what needs to be presented again or what the students need more practice with.
Throughout the lesson feedback and correction focuses on the target language as well as language previously taught.
At the end of the lesson, I normally elicit what students remember from the lesson, what they liked and what they disliked to help me plan the next lesson as well helping them remember the lesson.
