I would firstly ask what are student's interests and hobbies to build relation between us, ask how do they like to study, what is helpful and what does not work. Ask several questions about the subject they require support with, ask what do they like in this subject and what is something they do not enjoy at all. In the end I want my students to leave the session with understanding of the topic, not to complicate it more.
