My target when teaching is to first identify what it is that is holding someone back from progressing or understanding a particular subject or topic. I would gage what they already know to see where exactly it is they become stuck in the progression. It is then when I would guide them, show them how to solve a problem or answer a question, followed by exercises related to the topic students were incorrectly answering. It is important that they learn that from mistakes comes improvement and that this improvement will slowly build the foundation for progression and mastery of their subject. I would further show my students how exactly they can retain the information learnt and give them advice for revision as outside of the tuition sessions and schools, it is the single determining factor in their success and since so many students struggle with not the information and concept being taught but instead the memorisation, targeting both necessities simultaneously would guarantee success.
