I was an after school teacher in the past doing this exact thing, tutoring struggling students in a variety of topics such as art, math, english, etc. What I found works best isn’t just to go right into the teaching, but building a connection with the student to understand how their mind works, and to understand the best course of studying for them. Some children may work best with their hands, so I would have them write out the problem they are struggling with, or some may struggle with this and be visual learners, so for them I can work out the problem for them to see how it is done, and my own mental process for understanding the problem, so they can have a better understanding.
