Usually, I wait for student question(s) regarding content. This allows me to assess the problem(s) at-hand. Often times student(s) may not ask proper question(s) regarding content. As the content itself is probably not understood by the student. This is where I would "redefine" content for what it actually is. Initially, this tends to accelerate student learning outcomes. Followed by solving practical applications correlating with fundamental concepts. Thereafter, assigning students sets of problems to work on toward proficiency. The entire process is a relationship between student and instructor. Keeping serious students engaged has proven successful regarding content mastery.
