Individual student oriented approach designed to optimise engagement

It varies from student to student. Some really enjoy my being patient whereas others thrive on being told we can't cover everything to a university level of understanding and will have to move on. I like to get people laughing and wriggling around their head to locate an answer. We address what they aren't already getting at school and develop helpful ways for them to learn. For example, it really helped one student to get in the habit of writing an = at the start of each line it's implied in to remind her that if she mutliplies one side by something, she'd better do it to the other! Another student remembered things well when I asked leading questions designed to trip him up. It wasn't to make him paranoid - he hated being wrong and seemed to remember every mistake he made. Sometimes he did need a little nudge to actually give an answer rather than try to 'think about it' for half the lesson and avoid admitting he didn't know.
