Advert description
I believe the first contact with the student is one of the most important. It is the possibility I must know what the student’s purpose with the language lessons is, the prior knowledge of the language, and all cultural aspects involved in the learning process. While some students want to improve their speaking and listening skills, others have no idea of how to structure simple daily sentences, or even how to say basic words.
Once I have known them better, it will be possible for me to use a specific method with them. If they have had prior contact with the language, I like to apply to them a simple diagnostic test, so that I have an idea of their level and where I can start. If they are not able to say simple words or sentences, I start from the ground but always focus on their reality and aim.
Regardless of the student's level, I believe it is very important to adapt the teaching process to the reality of the student. For instance, it is better for to them learn vocabulary they can use in their daily activities. For a whole new beginner, it may be easier to remember words and expressions related to his/her routine than those of the aviation field, for example. On the other way round, for someone who works in this field of work, learning about aviation and airport vocabulary may be perfect including for professional purposes. Some students want to expand their vocabulary, and others wish to improve their reading or writing skills.
It all depends upon the student’s needs. Once I am willing to understand the student's motivation and their needs, I will be able to help them to achieve it.
