I have organised several educational events in my hometown for youth groups where I emphasize the role of mathematics in physics. Topics covered include the first atomic bombs and fluid dynamics.
In these events I strongly encouraged the participants to ask questions when they did not understand. Getting students to form strong, informed and personal mental models of the concepts to aid problem solving would be my preferred approach. Frequent testing and prompt feedback is also a must.
I do not compromise on patience or on encouraging questions and further investigation so long as the core material is well understood (not just memorized).
