Advert description
I use a student-centred approach to learning and teaching. This is rooted in not only my own experience of learning but also in my time studying educational psychology at university.
The way a subject is taught can create a lifelong love or distance from a subject. I know this from how I fell in love with history, psychology, and philosophy at school. Here, I was encouraged to ask questions and to discover, instead of the knowledge being handed to me. It is a curiosity I carry on today.
I encourage my students to ask questions, and to take an active part in the lesson - not only to keep their attention but also to instill a sense of curiosity.
I also advocate open communication and cooperation, rather than a hierarchical, expert-led approach. I act more as a resource and give them a sense that they are driving the learning process. Mistakes are encouraged, in the belief that mistakes are crucial to make learning stick.
I also encourage hands-on learning - writing handwritten notes instead of using the laptop, or discussing the topic in conversation, instead of repeating it over in your head.
Typical sessions last at least an hour. Though, depending on the subject matter and urgency, a shorter or longer session can be arranged, as I also offer two to three-hour lessons, with breaks.
My lessons are for all ages; however, I have the most experience with older teenagers, covering GSCEs and below, as well as A-Levels and university level.
I have several years of tutoring experience, from those studying MA in Occupational Psychology to those studying for their GSCEs. I can cover detailed subject matter, as well as general discussions around how to best structure an essay.
