I needed tuition myself for A-level Maths, so I understand the need for a good teacher to fully explain mathematical processes to succeed. I would start with the foundations, such as multiplication skills and addition and subtraction, to develop towards harder skills such as algebra and difficult exam questions. I would do examples myself to demonstrate how to answer questions, explain why I did each step, then allow the student to have time to complete it themselves. I’d ask them to talk me through their steps as if they were the teacher and help them to thoroughly understand why they did each one, which is very important with Maths as method marks are equally as important as reaching the right answer. I would hopefully then progress to exam style question to prepare them best
