An empowering confidence building tutor! Let's make this more fun & smash your goals!

Advert description
I have taught at two institutions of Higher Education, in the UK and for an American University (Boston), and across different disciplines (Film, Media, Celebrity Culture, Performing Arts, Disability Representation, LGBTQ+ studies, Cultural Studies, Creative Writing), which underlines both my versatility and the broad nature of my expertise. I am passionate about the need for freedom to teach across several subject areas, embracing different methodologies and practice, and my current position allows for this diversity of approaches. I have enjoyed the challenge of learning new areas of study as I have moved jobs to different departments and enjoy how these changes of teaching focus have then gone on to inform my research.

My goals are to keep on improving as a teacher, lecturer and a researcher, in order to continue inspiring students to bigger and better things. I enjoy creating opportunities for students where at all possible. There is no better feeling than watching people realise their potential, especially if they seem initially to have doubts about what they might achieve and empowering them through that.

I am currently also researching contemporary British Drag Queens, in the 4th year of my PhD in Humanities. I have a Masters (M.A) in Film and Media Studies and a B.A (Hons.) in Creative and Performing Arts. I also have a PGCAP (Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice) making me a fully qualified Lecturer in Higher Education and I have Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy status (FHEA).

Specialties (not exhaustive): English, European cinema, British cinema, Queer/LGBTQ+ cinema, horror in cinema, the role of women in romantic comedy in Hollywood cinema, censorship, celebrity culture, society and culture, arts and culture festivals, autobiography and autoethnography, film and television internships, British and American television drama and soap/serial drama, creative writing, poetry, popular culture, wellbeing, arts and health interactions
Paul in a nutshell
Theory
Applying theory to our personal lived experience and seeing if the theory matches with our life experience or not
Empowerment exercises
Analogies and metaphors are always great ways to break down what may initially feel like a concept that is hard to understand - I use them to simplify these concepts and make them much easier to understand.
Conversational

Conversational
Learning is a two-way street - I always learn just as much from my students as they learn from me :)
To make what may appear boring or 'dry' material more fun and bring it to life.
Making elements relevant to you - things that you can link and relate to your life- therefore easier to remember
I cater for all learning styles; audial, visual and kinaesthetic - a lot of people are a mixture of all three.
