English and Maths can be boring to most students, so I like to find out what a students interests are, and then gear lessons towards those specifics as much as I can. I like to find out how a student wants to learn, and what they are comfortable with. English and Maths can be boring to most students, so I like to find out what a students interests are, and then gear lessons towards those specifics as much as I can. For example, if a student loved playing computer or console games, I would include these in their learning, as it would engage them much more.
Some students learn from visual aids, whilst others prefer paperwork.
The most important aspect for me is to engage with the student personality wise. If a student connects with the tutor, finds them fun and engaging, they will relax and want to learn. This can only happen by being open, honest and taking an interest in the person.
I have taught Functional Skills English and Maths from Entry Level 1 to Level 2. This has been face to face and online via a one to one setting. I adapt the range and speed of the lessons to suit the student. On occasions, I have gone out into the real world with the student so the learning can be adapted to real-life situations, such as shopping, where the student can apply what they have learnt.
Learning needs to be fun, engaging and conducive to life.
