Advert description
I moved to the United Kingdom when I was 5 years old, and am part of the second generation of citizens living here - with my parents being the first generation of citizens who moved here in 1970 from East Africa. With only my father being fluent in English he had emphasised the importance of my siblings and I becoming fluent in English so that we could integrate and become part of the local community in this foreign country where the language, culture and etiquettes were alien to us, and being fluent in 2 Asian languages, English soon became our 3rd fluent language.
Given my linguistic skills, I ended up with an additional role of becoming an Interpreter for medical staff whilst working for one of the local Health Authorities, and my passion to teach English to speakers of other languages had begun, and seeing how powerful the English language is, was perfect for my ambition; to be able to teach English to those who required the full understanding of the language.
My first real experience of TESOL began when I had an opportunity to teach English to the Polish community who had arrived in our local area, just like my parents, in search of employment and a better life for their families. The lessons began with the foundations of English grammar, and soon became more conversational based - where the students were more keen to learn the relevant language skills to apply for jobs and attend interviews, and to also learn the cultural etiquettes in a fun manner of the 'do's and don'ts' of the English language. I am happy to compile bespoke lessons as required by the students.
