Advert description
I have a 1st class honours degree in Economics and a passion for Mathematics.
Having struggled with asking for help throughout my education I have a lot of admiration for anyone that is trying to improve and has the courage to ask for help.
I am a careful listener that wants my students to excel; which often involves coaching them to be aware and accept their frustration, so they can then move forward and see the problem clearly.
Seperating your current arithmetic skill from your potential is maths can also be a really helpful insight. Arithmetic is not necessarily maths, it is more about practice and memory than any "natural" mathematical ability. Helping people become aware of this, to avoid getting stuck in that mental pothole of using their arithmetic scores/confidence/speed as proof they are "no good" at maths is important. Those things are very poor measures that certainly do not dictate or even predict your final grade. Stopping someone from beating themselves with their "arithmetic-ability-stick"
can go a long way.
I believe any grade is possible for any student, it simply requires installing the belief they can achieve it first. Followed by the necessary work (but this needn't be painful! often simple tips and tricks can revolutionize someone's approach).
Achieving that grade is about first classifying the problem on the paper followed by applying the relevant "recipe" to deliver you to the answer. This requires "doing" maths,
With a passion for computers, machine learning and maths, I have been inspired by the personal stories of mathematicians (e.g. Ed Thorp, Laplace, Euler, von Neumann). Their stories helped make maths personable for me, rather than something locked away in a place only those "naturally talented" can reach. Their stories also exposed the very real adventures mathematics can unlock (wearable roulette computers, robotics, ballistics, jets, drug discovery, origami, AI etc). If you want to see some really cool stuff about mathematics, check out 3Blue1Brown and Eddie Woo on YouTube.
Separately, I have extensive experience in hospitality and construction having managed bars and renovated houses. This has honed my communication, interpersonal and project management skills.
I look forward to hearing from you.
