Advert description
I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge, where I studied History and Politics. During my studies, I completed weekly supervisions which required essays ranging from-words. These essays necessitated a level of in-depth research, capacity to analyse, evaluate, and synthesise knowledge which I am now keen to apply as a tutor.
While at school, I attained As in English, History, Modern Studies, and Maths at Advanced Higher level. Therefore, I am well acquainted with the demands, content, and structure of these courses and can respond accordingly to the challenges each individual student might be facing.
I have already gained some experience tutoring as I assisted a masters student at Strathclyde University with his thesis, which attained a first grade with distinction.
Furthermore, I have varied experience working with young people. Particularly, while at school I coached my junior debating team. This role required a patient, calm, and understanding demeanour to respond to each different child's needs and hints of disagreement or discomfort. Picking up on these verbal or non-verbal cues has helped me build interpersonal relationships with junior debaters and ensure they get the most out of public speaking- whether that is building their confidence, making new friends, or winning competitions.
As an individual I really seek to be a positive influence, and often do so through volunteering. I have volunteered in two charities, namely LEAP and Jimmy's. The former is a befriending service for older people facing isolation and the latter is a shelter for homeless people. Both instances required me to adjust my conversation style to the needs of potentially vulnerable individuals, while still trying to build a friendly and easy-going rapport. I believe these skills and experience is vital when tutoring as a young person needs to feel confident in your presence and, most importantly, have confidence in you.
Finally, as an ardent reader I am looking forward to discussing books and general writing ideas with any potential student! Though impossible to pick a favourite, some of the ones I would recommend would be East of Eden (John Steinbeck), The Age of Reason (Jean Paul Sartre), and The Secret History (Donna Tart). I hope to learn from my students too and hear their book recommendations or interests!
