Advert description
Amateur Historian and researcher with a 1st class MA (Hons) from the University of Glasgow. An accomplished generalist with exceptionally broad range of knowledge of History and adjacent subjects (eg. Classical Civilisation, Archaeology, Politics).
Specialist subjects that I can delve into much more deeply include Medieval Britain, the Crusades, The Early Middle Ages (the end of the ancient, Roman World and the often misunderstood transition to the Medieval world, c-AD), The Islamic World, Classical Civilisation, the evolution of warfare, and more.
I've only recently become available to become a paid tutor, which is an exciting development as a step towards achieving my long-held aspirations to become a full-time educator - my true calling!
When I've been an informal tutor in the past, I've had the best results by dividing lessons into two parts:
One very structured, and focused on working towards the specific outcomes you need to achieve. This can include coaching around core competencies like essay writing, research methods, handling historical sources, critical thinking, as well as following a structured plan to ensure that your knowledge of your subject matter is up to the standard you'll need to achieve your desired outcomes.
The other part of my lessons is, in contrast, very much a free-flowing and unstructured discussion. It's in the nature of studying History that typically, the work we do in the first part will lead to a lot of tangental questions about the wider historical context that our work fits into, and it's important that you have time to ask those questions. The answers will typically lead to even more tangental questions, and some very broad and interesting discussions. It's learning in this way that really gave me my passion for history, and gave me such a broad understanding of the when, what, where, how, and why of the human story.
I'm available to tutor at different levels, from Primary School through to University years 1 and 2, and even some Honours subjects.
