Hi! My name is Matt and I am a native British English speaker and teacher. I also speak Chinese and have studied Spanish, French, German, some Italian and a tiny bit of Arabic. I have a degree in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge.

I love learning languages - the challenge, and the joy! - and helping my friends and students to improve their English. I have a wide range of interests, so I'm looking forward to chatting with you about the things that interest you most. I'm interested in cultures, technology, the natural world, society, food, the future, history, and different kinds of art... and I always love to learn about something new. So, what shall we talk about first?

I have three and a half years' experience teaching English 1-1 via webcam, just like I will be doing with you. I like to start from your skills and interests, so I will ask you to bring your own topics (or even English materials) that you'd like to talk about, and I will support you to enjoy communicating with me at your level, right from the start. I can also set you tasks (maybe a presentation to prepare or a piece of writing) if that's what you like.

I will use my expertise to identify your areas for improvement, which may be in pronunciation (I have thorough training in practical phonetics), grammar, vocabulary, or style, and I will suggest methods to improve (including formal exercises/drills where appropriate) and help you to make the most of them.

Before I started teaching online, I had two years' experience teaching in the classroom in China, at secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and several months as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia.
