Born in Alaska and with a most colorful and well-traveled past, Marthanna has called Durham, NC, home for 30+ years. Her photographic specialties include children's fine art portraiture and documenting women and children in organic settings. Marthanna's training comes as much from her inner eye as from her extensive training at Penland and other respected institutions. Her degree in Human Development and graduate studies in Early Childhood Education have become the foundation of her artistic career. Her featured work is in Time, Oxford American, Don't Take Pictures, and other national and international magazines; The Fence photo exhibition; the Griffin Museum of Photography (Boston); the Center for Fine Art Photography (Fort Collins, CO); the front covers of novels, including Sylvia Plath's, The Bell Jar, (Faber and Faber, London) and Susan Ripps', Sisters: Devoted or Divided, (Kensington Press, New York); and projects for ABC's Good Morning America, UNC Press, Duke University, Rice University, and HarperCollins, as well as projects in Singapore, Germany, and England. Her fine art photography has received worldwide recognition, including the Award of Excellence in the International Black and White Spider Awards (London), the Mardi Gras Judge's Choice Award (Atlanta), the IN FOCUS Merit Awards (Palm Beach), and numerous International Photography Awards.

I have been an internationally recognized photographer/artist for 37 years and an educator. I taught beginning photography at Duke University's Bryan Center in Durham, North Carolina. I also was Lead Teacher and an Assistant Director at child development centers. In addition, I taught and tutored small groups and 1:1 with homeschooled children in rural Iowa (USA). We explored experimental art and photography with a twist of geography and science in a series of projects on Australia, including details about Kangaroo Island and Tasmania .and Aboriginal Art.
