Completely baffled by Contemporary Art, or are you trying to dive into a particular niche of contemporary artistic trends? Whatever your needs, I will tailor our lessons to you. For beginners and students looking to get into Contemporary Art, we will start with the history of modern day art: its roots in modernity and new focuses of representation. We will then discuss the emergence of the plethora of styles you can find in any contemporary art museum today: painting (is there anything new to be done in this age-old practice?), digital and video art (is digital art real art?), installation (how are installation and sculpture different?), printmaking (can works that are mass-produced be considered art?) and a variety of other disciplines. We will also go over the social, political and cultural themes that have culminated in the artworks we see today. In further lessons, we will also go over the role of the western tradition as well as international influences in current artistic practices and artists. We will compare and contrast artists from across the world to tease out themes of dissonance and resonance. My goal is that you come to examine and critique your preferences in contemporary art in ways that are nuanced, informed, and authentically you. More importantly, my aim is for you to enjoy and be inspired by art in a way you have not before.
