Advert description
I am a former university academic with twenty-five years experience teaching English language and literature. I completed a doctorate in English Literature at the University of Oxford in 2000, and after that spent eighteen years teaching at Japanese universities, including as Associate Professor of English Literature at Meiji University in Tokyo. After returning to England from Japan to be with my family several years ago, I settled in the Lake District where I now work as a teacher, writer and editor.
I have experience teaching English to all ages, not only those in higher education but also preschoolers and students at primary and secondary level. I have supported students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including native speakers of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, and a number of European languages, particularly Polish.
I possess a Cert.TESOL qualification to teach English as a additional language. I also speak Japanese.
My lessons are informal and I like to adapt them to the student's individual needs. Although students are welcome to choose a textbook if they wish to, I usually make my own resources, as I am a published writer. I like to encourage students to explore literature and film as part of their leaning process.
