Legal English for international law students and professionals

Advert description
I specialise in teaching international students Legal English. I have a law degree, experience working in the legal field, and I also have a teaching qualification and over ten years’ teaching experience. My goal is to help international law students and legal professionals build their confidence and knowledge in Legal English to help them move forward in their legal career.

I am the co-author of a 2018 publication called Advanced Legal English, and I have also been a writer for the TOLES (Test of Legal English Skills) Exam. I have taught many many law students and legal professionals over the years, so I understand the challenges students face when studying Legal English. There are complex legal concepts, specific legal vocabulary, and legal documents, such as commercial contracts, are usually full of legalese. There are verb-noun collocations specific to the legal field, for example, to revoke an offer, or to award damages, specific phrasal verbs, hand-down a judgement, or set aside a contract. And everyone’s favourite prepositions. Prepositions can be tricky in general English, and in Legal English it can be even more difficult. I can help you use prepositions correctly in legal documents and in your writing.

Here is an example of something that we might look at in a lesson:
Look at the contract clause below:

“Notwithstanding the foregoing, the seller hereby warrants and represents that the good sold are free from any encumbrance”.

What does “Notwithstanding the foregoing mean?” What is a warrant and what is a representation and is there a difference? What is an encumbrance? And notice the language, free from any encumbrance.

I can help you understand legal vocabulary and concepts in English law, and while doing this, we can also work on speaking, writing and listening in English.

If you would like to know more, please go-ahead and book a lesson with me. Whether you are a recent law student or legal professional I’m ready to help you.
