I start by introducing myself and ask the students to write down 3-5 sentences about themselves or something that is on their mind. I do the same as an example, so they know what they should do even if they didn't understand every single word of the question. When they finished, I read my sentences and add a bit more detail, then I ask them to do the same. This way, we get to know each other, I have some information to remember the student by, and I will have a clearer image of where their skills are at and what we should be focusing on. Next, I present a task, usually reading or listening with words and grammar to learn, I choose one that I have prepared beforehand according to different levels of English. After explaining rules and meaning of words I'd ask them to complete a task by themselves, or if I have a large group of students, I ask them to work in pairs. This is a student centred approach that focuses on their abilities and the group task promotes co-operation between students who can also learn from each other.
