Advert description
My job has always been to enable and empower the individuals that I work with the choice to make their own decisions by providing them with the relevant information for their issues. My background of work has involved supporting victims of domestic abuse, individuals with mental health issues, neurodiversity, human trafficking and modern slavery as well as displaced refugees around the work are just a few to name.
I have supported families and children who are not achieving or attending school or educational institutes. I offered a listening ear to understand some of the issues which may be causing problems for the individuals. For example, sometimes it was due to the relationship with the parents, in this case I would support them in getting other support such as mediators to speak to the child and parent. Other issues could have been cultural barriers, so I offered the school cultural awareness training which other parents could attend. There were also issues of self confidence and mental health. I would then encourage the individuals to speak to a professional counsellor or try to support them the best way that I could in improving their attendance or quality of work.
At the university of Derby I worked within the Wellbeing Service supporting students who were struggling with their mental health, disability or learning difficulties to access further support and to discuss the issues that they were struggling with. My role was to identify issues that they were struggling with and then liaise with various departments within the university for support. For example, disability team, counselling services, SMART team, Mental Health Team, Halls Management or liaising with tutors. I also referred students to external organisations such as sexual health, or substance misuse support services. During this role, I formed trusting and empathetic relationships with the students who accessed wellbeing services. I found that the counselling services and Mental Health Departments were busy and unable to book students in immediately. The waiting time during peak periods could be up to 5 or 6 weeks. I utilised my skills and experience of supporting, coaching and mentoring individuals. I am currently working towards the end of my I am currently studying MSc Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology MSC Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology.
