Advert description
I hold two Master's degrees: one in TESOL and one in Education (MA degrees), and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham. Through years of studies in Education and practical experience in servicing students, I have developed a particular interest in communicating and helping them to solve problems in field of languages (Mandarin or English) study via online platform with the use of the theories of educational psychology (e.g., emotions and motivation). In my most recent part-time role as a teaching assistant, I dedicated significant time to instruct students to finish four studies, i.e., imitating to write Chinese characters and speak Chinese sentences reading Chinese with the use of an eye tracker, and finishing Chinese grammar judgement tasks, which they often do not get timely instructions from their tutors on campus. I meticulously documented each tutorial session with students who scheduled appointments with me in a lab, creating comprehensive electronic portfolios for them. These portfolios enable students to clearly track their progress and improvements.
In my previous job, I was an educational consultant to help international students from different universities (e.g., UCL, KCL, University of Birmingham, etc.) to solve the problems about academic learning and daily life. I am impressed that my first customer, from University of Sheffield, who obtained comments concerning inappropriate citation in her assignment. She referred to style of citation from her student guide, but her module teacher still believed she did not cite references right. She felt anxious and was eager to intake academic citation. Therefore, she contacted me and ask me suggestions. I provided her with two suggestions based on the university's academic honesty policies. After that, she followed my suggestions and mastered the appropriate citation. Although this is small issue, my suggestion helped the student to master citation skills quickly and relived her, anxiety through free talk.
Equipped with the knowledge and skills that I have developed in my education background and working experience, I believe that I am fully prepared to embrace the potential challenges of a journey of job as an online tutor. This job will give me opportunity to improve experience in working with students.
