Advert description
I have a bachelors degree in Law, which means I have done a lot of reading and writing.
I also love to learn languages: I know English, Gujarati and German, and I am currently learning Spanish so I have a strong hold on how to make language-learners comfortable, and which techniques or resources are useful.
My parents are both immigrants who learnt English as a second language when they came to the UK, which means that I have essentially been "teaching" English my whole life, explaining how grammar works and why. In addition, I recognise how frustrating it can be to learn the language so I only want to make this process easier for learners.
Depending on the level of students' knowledge, my lessons would typically start with a recap or conversation just to get the "juices" flowing, and to help the learner become more confident with speech; from experience, I know this is the hardest part of learning but it also helps the most with confidence. Afterwards, I would integrate different activities including reading comprehension, writing, and listening. If the student was struggling particularly in one area, I would implement more of those activities. I also believe that homework (simply one sheet or remembering a list of vocabulary) would be useful. I would then end my class with something fun; perhaps listening to a song or watching a part of a movie or tv show in English and perhaps going over what the student did/didn't understand. I would also make sure to check-in with the students regularly, to ask whether everything is making sense to them and what I could improve on to make the experience more useful to them.
My aim for applying to this job is to help people similar to my parents, or even myself, who want to increase their opportunities and perfect their language skills. Learning a language takes courage and patience but I am certain I can help people to improve them and I am very passionate about being an understanding and easy-going teacher who will push my students but keep them comfortable and engaged so as to not dishearten them or go at too fast a pace.
