I’ve got a TEFL background which insists on making the lessons interactive and trying to reduce Teacher Talking Time, however, I use stories a lot in my lessons, and history is storytelling to some degree.

I use a lot of pictures and try to elicit as much as I can from them.

I use comprehension questions to consolidate knowledge and to help those who might otherwise struggle to gain confidence.

I play Devil’s Advocate either myself or, better still, get the student to argue the opposing view.

I also create word games/quizzes for the student to go over terms/definitions.
