I believe creating an open environment where students feel comfortable expressing what they’re finding difficult is vital. Therefore, I would begin by building a rapport, understanding the student and, discussing the biology topics they’re comfortable with to build confidence. Following this, I would discuss the topics giving them difficulty, what they need to learn and together establish clear learning objectives/goals all whilst remaining open and calm to allow them free expression. I would then discuss how they would like to learn: understand what works for them; what does not; their learning style and, developing activities/methods based on their answers. During this, I would also try to deduce what motivates them and ensure they are satisfied with everything so far. Then, I would establish a timeline to complete these activities and meet their learning objectives. Throughout these conversations I would note the expectations the student has from me and share my own to create an environment of understanding and trust to help put them at ease. I would then commence the tutoring session/s ensuring each is tailored and as engaging as possible with any necessary changes made as needed.
