Advert description
Hello!
My name is Nisa. I am a recent First Class Biomedical Science graduate from the University of Warwick. I did my pre-university studies in Canberra, Australia where I graduated from the International Baccalaureate within the top 3.94% of the entire November 2019 cohort with a 95.45 ATAR.
I have extensive mentorship experience where I was involved in growing IBlieve, a non-profit organisation initially established to help students vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic. I mentored 4 students, guiding them in organising, and revision, university applications, and other academic concerns. I also tutored 2 of the 4 students in IB Biology, while balancing my role as Outreach Lead for the the tutoring programme.
Mentorship continued to be an avenue of interest to me in university where I started as a mentee, followed by mentoring 3 first year students. In my final year, I continued to informally mentor my mentees, while I worked as workshop coordinator for the Warwick Biology Society and the School of Life Sciences. I organised 25 informal academic workshops to support life science undergraduates in learning in university. These included developing laboratory and analytical skills, essay writing, revision, career guidance from career coaches etc.
I believe you learn best by doing so I tend to have a hands-on and visual approach to teaching. I like to make it as interactive as possible. My workshop structure generally started with a theoretical briefing while the rest of the session focused on practising the skills we hoped to develop. For example, during the lab math session I would cover examples of formulas we often used, the attendees were then given a mix of real-life and fake data to process.
Lastly, I like to emphasise that I don’t know everything and that anything I impart are just suggestions and are not clear-cut strategies for success. My previous teachers and mentors allowed me to learn the way I learnt best so I want to allow my students the same opportunity. Education is important to me and something I don’t take for granted, so if there’s one thing I would like to impart, it would be to maintain your curiosity about anything and everything.
Sincerely,
Nisa :)
