Advert description
First of all, I’ll listen to what the student wants and needs. Do they want to be taught a whole concept from scratch or do they want help in applying known knowledge in different scenarios, etc.
From there, I will curate something to target what they’ve asked me. If they want me to explain a whole concept to them, then I shall do so visually (or in whatever learning style they say works best for them). If they want to target exam questions, then I will pull up a plethora of exam Qs starting with easier ones and progressing onto more challenging ones. We will break these questions down together and I will help them realise exactly what the examiners would want you to talk about in each scenario. I’d give them tips and tricks to help them identify the specification points they need to target better and I would just help them with their overall fluency of the subject.
I would always ensure I keep checking up on them throughout the session, fostering an environment where questions are welcome. I have firsthand experience in having tutors who don’t bother to make sure whether or not you’ve fully understood concepts or if you understand every single point in the explanation they gave… I know how frustrating that can be. I wish to eliminate these sorts of problems within students. I want to make sure they’re confident in what they know, that they have a conceptual understanding of the topics they’re taught so that they can easily apply these to various scenarios within questions.
I’ve taught GCSE students before and they’re always appreciated the fact that I “over explain” concepts because it genuinely helps them understand it better and it drills that concept into their long term memory. Whenever they would see a certain type of question, they would remember what we talked about and could successfully apply that knowledge.
