I am a second year Masters student in the discipline of History in South Africa with a strong focus on clothing history. I also have a background in historiography, and visual and museum history. I have graduated my Honours Magna Cum Laude, and aim to reach the same target with my mini-thesis.
I am a visual learner myself, so I like to incorporate visual techniques to enhance learning such as PowerPoints, Word document notes or drawing maps in order to be able to communicate the historical context better.
I love to teach in a narrative format where the hard hitting readings are transformed into a story, which simplifies the language, but gets to the crux of core content that needs to be understood. In this way, it feels more conversational than a historical lesson. I also supplement this with current examples to relate a flow of the relevancy of what we are learning to the present. I find that if students are able to see history in their daily life, grasping the jargon, and conceptual issues become easier.
I focus strongly on writing, and structured thinking. As I come from an environment where many students are economically disadvantaged, these skills are not developed fully by the time of tertiary education. Thus, by focusing on a structural way of thinking, reading and writing, I aim to integrate simple tools to read, and express your opinion the optimal way.
