My lessons would be focused on having actual meaningful conversations about things that interest us. Finding common ground and topics to talk about and then working our way, slowly at first, to having full back and forth conversations in English. At first the conversations would be simple and may focus on basic greetings and important words and sentences that will help us get through an initial chat. I will also have us come up with real life scenarios and try and play out an entire conversation that might happen, such as going to a store or a restaurant and speaking to someone there. I think talking to each other will establish both a method for learning and drive to pursue improvement in speaking ability. The conversations should focus on things that we find interesting in our day to day lives or personal events and stories. This way there is an element of fun and connection that is established. At times it might be difficult to find the right word or say something properly but with regular practice it will become second nature. Though my lessons will focus on speaking I will also have tasks that help improve reading and writing. One such task may be finding a personal favorite song and looking up the translation then comparing the English lyrics to the Spanish lyrics. Occasionally I will ask my students to try and write down a short story in English and then we will go over it and break down what makes sense and what doesn't.
The main focus of my class, would really just be to chat with each other in English, helping get to the point where we don't need to stop and figure out what the next word is or how to say it, but rather we are simply comfortable with making mistakes and learning from them to ultimately become fluent in speaking the language.
