I like to use the first lesson as an icebreaking session which helps me learn what the strengths and weaknesses are of my students. Prior to the first lesson I insist on being sent through a few pieces of the students work to help me further assess.
I like to take a flexible approach as no two students are the same and the joy of one to one tutoring is that it is possible to tailor the lessons to the student. So following the first session I like to make each session about one particular facet of their technique that needs tweaking. This careful approach, I believe, leaves them best set up for improvement.
My lessons are built upon interaction and establishing trust between student and teacher.
