Lesson formats:
Depending on the needs of the student.
- I can help revise for exams, making plans and going over difficult subjects in more detail.
- I can help with homework, finding alternative ways to understand a problem, or giving the student additional tools to solve the questions themselves.
- I can create lessons and tasks. This is particularly useful if a student has fallen far enough behind that they can't even approach the subject matter they are supposed to be learning. I can create a mini course structure with lessons to get them back up to speed at their own pace.
- I can go beyond the subject matter taught in school. Sometimes students want a tutor because they aren't challenged enough by their course materials. I can find and teach interesting appropriate subjects they might want to branch into for an extra boost in their school subjects.
How I teach:
Finding the right approach is crucial to helping a struggling student. Schools, by virtue of their classroom sizes, are forced to take a middle ground in basically every aspect of their teaching. This isn't appropriate for every student.
I have had students who felt overwhelmed by the amount of rules, interactions, and special cases they needed to learn off by heart. This is often the case in statistics, chemistry, and languages. I have found that teaching the underlying principle behind these rules, even if it is a bit more complex, helps these students.
On the other side of the spectrum, some people do better with a "toolkit" of methods to solve a problem rather than a deep understanding. I often find these students struggling to understand the why behind their maths classes. For them, developing this toolkit is key to helping them pass their exams.
I pride myself in finding the correct approach for each individual. That is the point of tutoring, after all. Finding out if they're interested in the theory, or the application, or maybe just want to get through their exams with a good mark is the key to helping them get through a difficult subject. I like to teach with a mix of problems from their textbooks and ones I have tailored to what they are struggling with at the moment.
Unless they specifically need it, the time with me is for learning, not working, and I try to use problems or questions as a quick test of understanding rather than practice.
