There is a diamond in each and every learner and it only takes a good teacher to discover, cut and polish that diamond. Teaching is one of the most important components of the learning process. As a growing and ever-changing field, I believe teaching in computer science is not only about transmitting knowledge to students but also about inspiring the students to discover concepts independently. In the classroom, I believe in the learner centred approach that enhances collaboration rather than competition. It is a process of collective improvement for both the students and the teacher. I am enthusiastic to engage in this exciting process with the best young talents of our future generation. My first teaching experience in computer science started when I was a second-year competitive programmer in university. I would give weekly tutorials to junior students about standard algorithms that are often used in programming concepts. I helped my lecturers to prepare programming problem sets and helped the students debug their submitted programs. After graduating I joined a private college in Harare where I taught Computer Science using Cambridge curriculum. To compliment my teaching passion, I did a post graduate diploma in education with ZOU and explored research on how ICT can be
utilized in schools during teaching. I believe that a central goal of teaching a subject is to nurture the ability of students to inquire and learn the subject themselves. In the year 2022 I completed a master’s degree in Big Data Analytics and I now believe that students should be incited into
explorative thinking, where they discover and learn. Achieving this goal is particularly important in computer science because computer science is one of the most rapidly changing fields. Many programming languages and software techniques that we are using today did not exist years ago and most likely will be superseded years from now. Nevertheless, the ability to learn can serve a lifetime. I believe the success of a career in computer science largely depends on one’s ability to keep up with the rapid innovations happening every day in the field. To achieve this goal, I will design lesson plans and modules that encourage and nurture “knowledge exploration” for students rather than “knowledge transmission”.
