Initially, I greet my student and ask them if they have any particular goals they want to achieve by the end of the session. I then ask them what particular topic they want to focus on during the session/ what particular problem they are facing and whether it relates to comprehension of the material or to application to an exam question. After the desired nature of the session is established, depending on my student's learning style i.e. visual, through diagrams, through analogies etc., I explain them the theory behind the concept they are struggling with until they give me indication that they understand it. I then provide a practice question that the student can have a go at, that is based on the topic were are focusing on in that particular session. I go through one worked example with the student, showing them the process of answering the question. After this, I will provide a new, blank question to the student that they have to work out. This is then repeated until they provide the correct answer and explain how they came to it, where I assess if they have accurate understanding of the content and the application. I then ask them if the need any other help in anything else or if the still don't understand the problem facing us. Once I receive indication of comprehension, I will provide them with an optional extra comprehension task and ask if they have any particular problematic topics I can prepare in advance for next time.
