I have over ten years' experience working as an English Teacher in Asia and Europe. I have taught mainly young learners (ages 2 -13), however I do have two years' experience teaching adults. In Singapore, I taught English as a First Language, focusing on exam technique, creative writing and grammar. In Belgium, Spain and Ireland, I taught English as a Second Language, focusing more on oral activities to promote speaking opportunities.
When I get new students, I do an assessment to gauge where they are in terms of their abilities.
I also find out what the student wants to achieve, e.g. help in preparing for IELTS or to increase confidence in speaking. When I taught A2 level job seekers in Belgium, I assessed their levels individually and tailored my lessons according to their needs. In that instance, they wanted to be able to hold basic conversations, write simple emails, cover letters and CVs. I wrote my own teaching materials but also used prescribed texts such as Market Reader or Business Builder.
When I teach young learners, I use a lot of visual cues (flashcards, toys, pictures, objects, etc.) to pique their interest. I also incorporate phonics games, songs and puzzles. I use a variety of teaching methods including TPR (Total Physical Response), a dynamic approach in which students are encouraged by the teacher to use physical responses, such as miming the meaning of a word, in addition to spoken responses.
I look forward to seeing you in class!
