The main structure of my strategy is to familiarize with the fretboard and the notes, then master the 1st 3 open chords E, A and D and build variations from that. Thereafter, we will proceed to form barred chords based on the E, A and D formations. At all stages I incorporate strumming patterns and later on proceed to plucking. I also focus on ear training so that the student will know how to transcribe his/her own songs of interest. I also have created a book on chord formations.
I teach as young as 5 yr olds but the average are teens. Each one differs from another and it is also part of my strategy to decipher the teaching style that will suit the student best. At all instances, I let the student choose the songs they are interested in so I could build better motivation to learn. I then apply the lessons I teach, using the said songs of interest.
