I have and level 3 TESL certificate (Teaching English as a Second Language), a two-year Associate in Science degree, and a level 3 Counseling certificate.
I have over two years experience teaching ESOL. My experience is in both classroom and one-to-one instruction, gained through volunteering for various charities.
I aim to teach students, especially beginners, language and information that is meaningful--words, phrases and general information that students will use in their daily lives. For example, I teach about places in the community, medical appointments, emergency numbers and situations, seasons, days and months. The lessons will allow students to practice the four main language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. In my lessons I don't just use words. I use pictures and real objects. I ask for and always welcome the student's input about their learning preferences.
Through learning Spanish and French, I have a better and deeper understanding of the difficulties in learning a new language. I have empathy for people who are learning English as a second language and, am therefore patient and understanding. I know that pronunciation, spelling, remembering new words and using language in a different way from what one is used to can be hard and stressful. In addition, I have some awareness about the experiences and challenges faced by many students learning English as a second language. I fully understand that their challenges may affect their learning.
My approach is patient and gentle. I realize that learning is not a destination. It is a lifelong process.
