I always encourage an open channel of communication between my tuttee and I so I can work with them at a pace comfortable to them, and understand their best learning style. I first go through any material they are less confident in, ensure they understand the concepts fundamentally and thoroughly, then I hone in on exam techniques and set them a reasonable amount of work. I then mark and annotate their work, e.g., past papers, and provide my model answers/explanations if necessary, and we go through this in the next session. This was the approach I used to tutor my students last summer in A Level Chem, Physics, Maths and Further Maths.
