Being a second language learner myself, I understand how some students find the process intimidating or uncomfortable. Whilst living in Thailand, I have studied the Thai language privately and I can relate to the experience of a second language learner! This process can be overwhelming at times. I believe a learner must feel that they are comfortable in the lesson to ensure they can engage properly and retain the information presented to them. I also believe it is vital that myself and a student establish areas that the learner would like to excel in, whether specific areas of interest or specific skills that they would like to develop. Depending on the experience of the student, I also like to use task based learning as I believe these are an enjoyable and practical way to learn language skills. Learning vocabulary and grammar in isolation has its place in my classroom, but I see it fundamental that learners use their desired language in a natural way in order to practice how they would use it in the real world. Finally, I want my class to be fun! Weeks and months of classes add up over time and to ensure your engagement is as good as it can be, I need to make sure our class is a part of the week you look forward to :)
