I love to teach using instructional materials such as videos, examples and images. We live in a visual world and I believe that educators should adapt to trends to make learning interesting and to keep students interested. Using real world, day-day experiences in the student's life will help such a student to understand certain concepts. I am also a flexible, resourceful and creative tutor, being born and raised in a third world country has taught me how to teach with minimal resources. My average class lasts for about 50- 60 minutes, and it consists of the following steps:
1. I ask questions to know the level or previous knowledge of the learner on the topic, this takes an average of 5-10 minutes
2. I introduce the topic and explain with examples. I often use Youtube videos, website pages etc. I often set aside 30 minutes for this, and also allow the learner to share inputs.
3. I confirm from the learner if he or she wants me to go over any area or needs me to share clarity on any aspect of the lesson. Most times 5-7 minutes.
4. I share materials that the learner can study for further readings as an assignment. This sums up the lesson and often takes about 3- 5 minutes.
I believe after an hour, monotony sets in and the level of concentration drops, hence I try to keep it short and in segments, this has proven to be quite useful, and learners are able to remain on their toes.
