I will encourage students to produce well designed work, in what is the best way, not necessarily as a technical instructor. Using my experience of many years working as a graphic designer to encourage students to produce the work that works best for them.
I'd want students to enjoy what they are producing and enjoy producing it. Giving them the building blocks to be able to create what they want in the future. Using Indesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator etc.Teaching the basics of typography and photography and then showing them what can be produced using the best of Adobe Creative Suite and well as encouraging them to look at other influences that will aid their designs.
Help them how to ask the right questions if there is a brief, to know you are creating a piece of work and solving the problem that has been devised.
All in all they should enjoy designing.
