I believe in having trust and respect from whomever I'd tutor first, as children respond best and feel most confident. I'm dependable, consistent and positive and empathise with a child's journey at school. I help to bring context, bringing the current world affairs into a curriculum that can oftentimes feel lost in the past or irrelevant to what a child may want to do in their career.
I study lesson plans and review textbooks to prepare for a tutoring session and prepare additional projects as well answering questions about the material being covered in class. I will support with proof reading and supporting the student's coursework/homework, providing support for questions they may not get the chance to ask in school. This is not to do work for the child, only to provide what a teacher does but from home.
I would tailor my teaching/tutoring style to the child. Key techniques for history and other humanities subjects is first encouraging critical thinking and analysis skills. Patience, consideration and getting to grips with large formats of text can be tricky depending on a child's development so I would take this into account.
I believe in trying out as many techniques as possible (absorbing information through writing, whiteboard/visuals, auditory etc.). I'm also open to assisting with fields trips and conducting primary research - this can really encourage children as it brings subjects to life in new ways. Unfortunately schools often don't have the resources to provide these experiences.
