My lessons tend to be very informal, interactive sessions where I encourage the student to get involved throughout. I initially begin with some sort of interactive introduction to assess what you already know about the topic of the day before moving onto the topic itself in more detail. I try to come up with innovative ways to help students remember new, complex ideas such as linking them to things you would do in their normal life like football.
Following on from this I like to assess whether these new ideas have set in and if not then help the student to understand them by approaching the topic in a different manner. If I believe that the student has reached a good level with the topic, I will then introduce a challenge for them to accomplish, with assistance if necessary.
As these are private lessons, my lesson format is open to change to meet the needs of the student and I will go at whatever pace the student requests. This is because from my own experiences I know that students do best when they feel valued and can influence their lessons. I also understand that students don't want to sit around for an hour and listen to me talk at them, which is why I tend to make the lessons much more interactive and non-linear.
I have always encouraged my students to be truthful and open with me about my lessons, so that I can myself improve my teaching and help the students themselves become much better geographers whilst having an enjoyable time!
