From my personal experience, being able to hold conversations in French really develops the skills necessary to take your French to the next level as it allows for quick thinking and a proper flow to be created when either speaking or writing in French.
Since I live in Geneva I have learnt that what people appreciate the most is effort, no matter what level of French you work at it is appreciated, I want to enable my students to have the confidence in themselves to converse in French while also having the ability to write with proper grammatical accuracy.
When teaching I like to start with a brief conversation to switch on the linguistic side of the brain which allows for a more engaged lesson which can hopefully be entirely in French yet if the student prefers English that can be done as well.
Our lessons don’t have to be extremely formal and can be conducted however the students feels comfortable, that being regimented or a more laissé-faire approach.
