I tailor-make my lessons according to the student's needs. Typical first lessons may include a brief evaluation of the student's ability in different subject areas to identify which ones most need improvement. Alternatively, students may already know topics that need further focus before the first lesson, and in this case, I will tailor the first lesson according to that.
From there, I can use the information on the student's abilities in the first lesson to develop a personalised plan for a series of lessons. Here, I will plan to tackle a subject area each session. These would involve us going through revision notes, where we can go through information the student needs to learn and address any questions on the key concepts.
I will then take a couple of example questions being asked on the topics, and we will typically go through these together. Here, I first encourage the student to think the question through. We discuss potential answers using information from revision notes and inside the question to allow the student to arrive at the answer naturally.
If the student is still struggling with aspects of this topic at this stage, I will take some time to ensure they clearly understand what is being asked of them. Finally, I give them more questions and see how the student can tackle them with less input from myself so I can assess how much the student has improved. If they appear confident with the material, I will provide more advanced questions or ones from a different topic to preview the next session.
