Chemistry is a subject that requires strong foundational knowledge to build on, often I find students that are struggling at A-level have a poor understanding of some earlier concepts.
This can go unnoticed for a long while up until more difficult concepts arise in A2.
I use diagnostic questions to find out what misunderstandings my students have and use this to improve their foundations.
After this I like to use the student’s exam board specification to work on their specific weaknesses and turn them in to strengths.
I value efficiency and will always focus on whichever areas of chemistry will make the biggest difference to their overall understanding and grade.
I do expect students to do independent work outside of tutoring.

"I was struggling with the maths (in chemistry) but now I realise it's not that bad"
